A trip to the cemetery

Friday I was fortunate to have company (my niece and my cousin) for a visit to pablofisherman's grave: great weather, reasonable traffic, and good directions.

Forever the proofreader, I wanted to make sure the stonecutters were accurate, and they were.

Now it's back to emptying his storage locker of memorabilia and assorted other items for disposal. I've posted a giveaway ad on craig's list for some stuff useful for an invalid, hoping someone will pick it up this week.

Totem in Victoria, BC

So far we've done the British Columbia Museum, the Miniature World dollhouse exhibit, had tea in a Victorian tea room, bought some souvenir knick-knacks and enjoyed the non-rainy weather.

Our somewhat sedate touring pace picked up a bit when Renaissance Woman and elswhere arrive to join us yesterday, whisking us off to dinner at a funky eatery called John's Place. Instead of the local hockey fetish, the walls were decorated with U.S. baseball paraphernalia, including a fantasy mural of a baseball field, modeled, I think, on Boston's Fenway Park, featuring billboards advertising John's Place. I was astounded to find falafel on the menu, described as a tribute to John's memories of working in Jerusalem! There's just no escape!

A most satisying grandmothering experience: arriving early to pick up Mermaid Girl at her Sunday morning circus class.

Now that jet lag has diminished, I am very much enjoying this part of my trip, especially the ample availability of cheap sushi! And things have calmed down a bit in Booland: for the moment, there are no dirty dishes in the sink.

Rehov HaGilboa, Tel Aviv

In the Fall of 1988, while still living in an immigrant's dormitory, I used to walk around various Tel Aviv neighborhoods looking for the one I wanted to live in permanently. I happened upon Rehov HaGilboa, and fell in love with its shaded, slightly seedy, buildings. Now the street is almost completely renewed, and happily the built-from-scratch buildings blend in pretty well with the renovated ones.

I didn't find a home on this street, but one almost like it, around the corner!

Ancient Winepress, in situ

Ancient Winepress, in situ

This winepress, from the 5th century, is in exact spot where it was found, presently the location of the Land of Israel Museum, Tel Aviv.

I was at the museum today with my class from the Alma Institute. After viewing two exhibitions, one of photographs of Israel 1947-1957, the other of modern Israeli glass artists (photos on my flickr page), we returned to our classroom for a lecture by a brilliant archeologist who conducts the digs at Ramat Rahel in the summer. He invited us to participate in his dig next summer, provided we get up early enough to be there before sunrise. Dream on!

When I cast my eyes down to the floor of the classroom before his lecture, I realized I simply had to photograph the gorgeous tiles there (no flash).
