A good part of today so far was spent obsessing and discussing the current doings in Gaza. One of my friends regrets that Israel didn't send ground troops in at the very start to rout out Hamas terrorists more quickly, another focuses on the tragedy of civilian deaths, and now Joe the Plumber is coming to Israel to report on the situation first-hand as a citizen journalist.
To take a break, I had a refreshing conversation with my daughter-in-law Pippi Bluestocking, a professor of Medieval and Renaissance Drama back in the USA. And, not being able to control myself after the usual catch-up on my granddaughter's doings - actually make that my granddaughters' doings, because Mermaid Girl is visiting from Booland - I asked: Why are the English-language and European media so anti-Israel? To which Pippi replied, Because the Palestinian story is more dramatic.
Good heavens, she's not only a professor of Drama, she's also brilliant.
I wonder whether Joe the Plumber will upstage the mainstream media. He may yet emerge the true winner of the U.S. presidential election.

First of all, let me congratulate you on having Joe the Plummer visit Israel. He'll give you entertainment, if nothing else. :)
You're right about the media focus on Gaza, other people suffers as well.
I think you have a tendency to see only us who's critical of Israel. There are plenty of people, and a large segment of the media,that supports this war. (as well as the occupation, but that's another story) All in all, Europe is not as critical of Israel as you might think, especially not the Right.
Whether this war was necessary, I disagree, (time will tell, I guess) but I'm sorry for the suffering on the Isreali side as well. I forgot to mention that.
I do hope you're wrong on peace taking several generation. I hope there will be two states living side by side as soon as possible.

I am surprise to hear that a large segment of the media supports this war, but I'll take your word for it. I didn't mean to imply that Israel doesn't make mistakes, and that in this operation there aren't mistakes being made. "The fog of war" is a terrible thing.
I also don't mean to imply that I don't hope for peace while I am still here to see it, just that I don't expect it. "Hope for the best and plan for the worst" is a useful motto, especially when you're realistically concerned about survival.
Oy. Put me down for a bottle of wine. Shabbat Shalom!
