Elementary School Sign in Booland

Today I attended Kindergarten Orientation with Mermaid Girl. At her public elementary school, I noticed the "All Families Welcome" sign in front of the administration office. It says: "Our school wants to be welcoming. If you do not feel welcome here, or know of any gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender harassment, please call 1-888-307-9275."

I suppose families who can't read English aren't their target audience.

I find it amazing enough that the sign exists at all.

Do you know whose phone number that is?

Yah, they really should have it in Spanish at least. Maybe Vietnamese, too, around here. But like Udge, I'm happy it's there at all.

Julie-- the phone # is for the Washington Safe Schools Commission. Which I'm also happy is there.

I agree with Udge. I've never seen anything like that.

I think it's a great sign, and the graphic image is pretty clear, I'd say. But who knows, maybe they'll make them in other languages soon. Signs like that are one thing I miss about where I am from (SF Bay Area) - while not perfect, there's alot more open-mindedness than here.

I guess I'm being too finicky, but my experience with the Israeli counterpart of PFLAG sensitized me to the double-marginalization of homosexual immigrants from non-English-speaking countries.
